When Ken Starr, our founder, and CEO, started Home Comfort USA years ago, he made a commitment to honor every client.
Our technicians carry out this promise and bring ethics and integrity to every service.
For years, Ken helped other heating and air conditioning companies achieve their goals and boost their profits, and his expertise was sought out by many.
But he grew tired of companies that cared more about their income than about the people in the community.
After working for other contractors for decades, Ken had a series of epiphanies, realizing that he had a calling to open up a heating and air conditioning company that offered more. In 2013, he followed in his parents’ footsteps and opened a different kind of HVAC company.
Heating and air conditioning is Ken’s calling, and we hire technicians with the same dedication to the job. We are a faith-based company, and many of our staff members are involved in community service projects that change the lives of members of our community.
We treat our customers like family. When you work with us, you get more than quality work and excellent customer service. You get technicians and staff members who care.

Let’s control the air we breathe. When we do our weekend chores, have we ever wondered how much of the dust we wipe from our shelves is entering our lungs on a daily basis? What other toxic chemicals might be floating in the air? Contaminants like dust mites and volatile organic compounds are nothing to mess around with, which is why Home Comfort USA provides complete indoor air quality services to keep families healthy.
plant next to air conditionerLet’s make ourselves aware of the air we breathe. Many air quality issues can be linked to your HVAC’s ductwork and filters. However, there are many other possibilities that could be causing the air in your home to be a danger to you and your family’s health. To determine if your air quality is needing some TLC, look for these five signs:
How has your energy bill been fairing the last couple of months? Have there been significant increases since last year or the year before? Unless you’ve been experiencing harsher than normal weather patterns, a high energy bill can be your first sign of an inefficient HVAC system—and, poor air quality.
When we see insects, cockroaches, or mice, our homes feel like a garbage dump. We immediately think there must be a food source attracting these critters. Although that is a strong possibility, it’s more important that we determine where their secret hideout is. If they are calling our air ducts home, think about the terrible waste our air is picking up along the way.
If any of us have developed unexplained respiratory problems over the last few months, we need to have our air quality assessed. Dirt and debris accumulate over time, whether we want it to or not. If wheezing and sneezing have become a regular part of our lives indoors, we should have our ductwork checked out.
Different attic insulation companies will use various methods and materials for their services. There are pros and cons to each type of insulation, so some are more effective in certain situations than others. However, adequate insulation is applicable in just about any case. Here are the main attic insulation types used and some advantages and disadvantages of each.
Blown-in cellulose insulation, made from shredded paper and boric acid, is a low-cost method of home insulation that can get the job done. It’s easy to install and made from safe and recycled materials. But while cellulose can be cheap and effective at restricting unwanted airflow, it does have its downsides.
First, the cellulose installation process can create a lot of dust. Cellulose, like loose-fill fiberglass, is installed via an insulation blower that effectively hoses the area with insulation.
This method is excellent for filling tight or uniquely shaped spaces. However, the blower also produces excessive amounts of dust because of the material cellulose is made from. In addition to being a pain to clean, this can also cause damage to your home ductwork. If your goal is effective home heating, that’s the last thing anybody wants. Effective insulation should work with your home’s heating and cooling system, not against it.
Another potential issue homeowners can have with cellulose is moisture. Cellulose retains moisture, which means it can potentially become a breeding ground for mold and mildew. However, with proper installation and maintenance, fungal growth should be avoidable in most homes.
Spray foam insulation features some of the most substantial insulation on the market. Spray foam provides air sealing that keeps your home’s air inside and the outdoor air outside. Unlike cellulose, spray foam insulation is highly water-resistant, meaning you never need to worry about mildew or moisture damaging your attic with foam insulation. Spray foam is highly durable and long-lasting. When properly installed, spray foam can last longer than any other insulation method available.
Note: It’s crucial to remove pre-existing insulation to mitigate compromised indoor air quality when insulating your attic floor with spray foam. Please ask your HVAC technician for more information.
While spray foam insulation is highly effective, it also has some downsides. First and foremost, spray foam is the most expensive insulation option. While effective, the cost of using spray foam to insulate your attic isn’t worth it for many homeowners. Additionally, spray foam can be a little too durable at times. By that, we mean it can be near impossible to remove, making remodeling or renovating a space containing spray foam quite arduous. Removing stubborn insulation can be especially problematic if it covers any pipes or ducts that could require future repairs.
Lastly, the most severe downside of spray foam insulation is that it uses potentially harmful chemicals. Because of this, no homeowner should ever attempt a DIY insulation installation with spray foam. Safe installation requires a trained professional with specialized equipment for safety purposes.
Heating and cooling your home is about more than just having a powerful furnace or AC unit. Insulation and ventilation also play crucial roles in setting and maintaining comfortable home temperatures.
One facet of home cooling that’s easily overlooked is a radiant barrier—a thin layer, typically lining the attic, used to keep hot air out. A radiant layer is a small but crucial part of a balanced home cooling system. Without one, your living space can quickly become much hotter than it should be.
So what exactly are radiant barriers, and how do they work? To answer that, we need to look at how insulation works.
Three primary types of heat transfer occur convection, conduction, and radiation. Convection heat is the transfer of heat through liquids and gasses, such as in boiling water.

Conduction is the transfer through solid materials, like a hot pan on your stove. Most of the insulation in your home is designed to slow conduction, and convection heat flows throughout the house. This type of insulation is essential for keeping the air temperature in your home at the desired temperature year-round.
Insulation materials like fiberglass can do very little to stop the third kind of heat, radiant heat. Radiation is the transfer of heat through electromagnetic waves, such as the heat from the sun in our atmosphere. On hot summer days, the radiant heat from the sun can be overpowering to a home without a radiant barrier. Because other insulation materials don’t protect against radiant heat, an additional barrier is needed to serve that purpose.
